Determining how many recessed lights you need and the proper spacing implies that you have already chosen the recessed light you wish to use for your project. You only need to fill out the blank in the recessed lighting calculator according to your needs for

  1. The brightness of the recessed light you have chosen (measured in lumens)
  2. The ceiling height of the room you are lighting
  3. The room type where the lights will be installed. Light intensity requirements are different for the different rooms of your home. This is why room type will largely influence the spacing and ultimately the number of lights required for a specific room.

Result = Number of recessed lights and Spacing

As an example, if your recessed light output is 400-499 lumens, that your ceiling height is 8 foot, that you want to install your recessed lights in the kitchen, that your length and the width of your room is 10’ x 10’ feet, the quantity of recessed lights required will be 12 units. The recommended spacing between the recessed lights would be of 30” inches.

* Quick Tip *

For spacing between the wall and your nearest recessed light, the rule of thumb we recommend is to divide the space in between the lights by two in order to obtain the optimal measure. This means that for the example above, our spacing with the recessed lights and the closest walls would be 15” (30”/2 = 15”).
